NFC business cards: what they do and what they do not

Graphic showing NFC cards, a staff ID badge and a phone profile with a door reader

An NFC card has a small chip inside. When a compatible phone is held near it, the phone usually opens a web link, such as your digital profile or a WhatsApp chat.

  • What it does well. It opens a page you control, so you can change your details later without reprinting the card.
  • What it does not do. It does not send a contact file by itself. Saving a contact works only if the page it opens offers that option.
  • Not every phone will read it. Some phones have NFC switched off and some older models do not have it. A printed QR code on the card is a sensible fallback.
  • Think about privacy. Put on the linked page only what you would be happy to put on a printed card.
  • When a plain printed card is enough. One-off handouts, formal settings, or when the person you are meeting is unlikely to use the tap.
